Six Sentence Sunday

It's been a few weeks since I've played Six Sentence Sunday so this week I thought I'd share a few lines from my eBook, WILD FIRE. This is the third of the Beaumont Brides trilogy - you can download the first book, WILD JUSTICE, for free.

It's Melanie Brett Beaumont's story and, having been caught up in the dramas of her new family for the last few months, she is desperate to reclaim her sense of identity. More, to re-invent herself. She is being blocked at every turn: -

Swept along on a tide of blistering rage, her angry momentum carried her through the heavy glass door of the travel agent's office with such speed that the man approaching it from the other side was forced to step back sharply to escape the abrupt and painful rearrangement of his profile. And still she was oblivious to her surroundings until, on a reflex honed by an acute sense of self-preservation, the man grabbed her shoulders to prevent her from cannoning into him.


'Hey, there! Slow down.' The abrupt jolt almost stunned her, so deep had she been in her fury, so intent in her purpose. Melanie had never been so angry, had no idea that it was possible to feel that way and she raised her hand to her forehead, dazed by the suddenness with which she had been wrenched out of her temper.

The key was warm from his body, but his hands were cool. Long, slender fingers wrapped around her warm hand and the warmer key. Hidden layers of heat, like the hidden layers of meaning she sensed behind everything he said.

SIX SENTENCE SUNDAY

Welcome back to Six Sentence Sunday!

Today I'm snipping my six sentences from WILD FIRE, the third in my Beaumont Brides trilogy.

TV soap queen and West End star, Melanie Beaumont has accepted a bet from an old friend that she can't do an ordinary job for a month - take the Cinderella role and work as a cleaner.

She's just mad enough at everyone to give it a go. Her first job, cleaning up after a party that's got out of hand, goes pretty well - until the owner of the apartment arrives home earlier than expected...

Jack Wolfe's steel grey eyes flickered about the apartment and came back to rest upon Melanie as she wriggled out of Tom's grasp and got to her feet. She fielded the look, held it, refusing to be intimidated, but the man was not a bit like his brother.


Tom was young, still soft, with an eager puppy-like charm that ensured quick forgiveness of his doubtless many sins. She knew the type and kept firmly on a training lead he would be amusing company.


Jack Wolfe was darker, leaner, harder. A Doberman to Tom's Labrador.

For this week's SSS - for more details about that see here - I've taken this little snip from the second book of my BEAUMONT BRIDES trilogy, WILD LADY.

When I wrote WILD JUSTICE, I had no notion of writing a trilogy but when my editor read it she said, "Three girls, three books and can I have the first chapter of the second one this week so that I can use it as a teaser in the back of the first book."

Of course. No problem...

Gulp.

I have to tell you, that if I'd known I'd be writing Claudia's story, I'd have made her nicer, which really would have been a shame!

This one has a "heroine in peril" plot, and a self-appointed bodyguard.

Claudia, who could usually reduce a man to stuttering incoherence in less time than it took to say it, was seriously shaken to discover that this man was quite immune to her particular brand of magic. 
     Insurance? 
     That was all that bothered him? He wasn't in the least concerned about her health, the fact that she might have broken her neck? Apparently not. As their eyes met across the wreck of her car she received the very strong impression that he was quite prepared to break it himself. Well, the day was still young and if her anonymous correspondent was right, he might yet get his wish; the thought was enough to drive the smile right off her face.


Actually there are seven sentences, but one of them is only one word and that's allowed.

For this week's SSS - for more details see here, I've dipped into the first of my BEAUMONT BRIDES trilogy, WILD JUSTICE.  It has a revenge plot, old secrets, new secrets and a heroine determined to take back control of her life from the man whose mission in life is to destroy it.

      Fizz. God, but how it suited her. Best kept chilled - inclined to erupt when shaken.
     The thought of making love in a four-poster bed had been simmering in her head, fanning the damped down fire. Her deliberate lack of interest had alerted him and he had known then that he would take her there; that she wouldn't, in the end, be able to resist the romance of it.
     But while he had thought to melt the ice a little, it seemed that unwittingly he had used a blow torch because now she had said the words, there was no way of taking them back.

DOUBLE THE FUN...

This month, in the UK, Mills and Boon have republished a three-in-one called AN ORDINARY GIRL AND A SHEIKH, featuring books by myself, Barbara McMahon and Nicola Marsha.

By sheer coincidence, all three of us have recently released eBooks.

Ooops...

I can't believe it's been a whole week since my last post.  That's mainly because my book is gathering pace and I'm also spending a lot of my spare time on the Mills and Boon New Voices Facebook page.  If you haven't checked this out, it's a terrific place to ask any questions you might have about the competition. (I hope you're all working on that first chapter!)

Not only are there posts from editors, lots of help from authors, but also writers who took part last year.

I'm getting really excited about my workshop at Pontardawe Library on the 31st August, but added to that I'll be talking to Jamie and Louise on Radio Wales on Monday, 29th August at 11 am.  If you can't tune in (because of time or you're not in Wales!) you can catch up on iPlayer later.  I'll try and post a link.

But it's not all been writing this week.

My vacuum, a much loved original Dyson had reached a point where I was having to clean up after it and so I retired it this week and bought a fabulous new one with ball and a whizzy bit at the front and heavens, it is brilliant!

The carpets are all sitting up and looking really chirpy.  I don't often enthuse about housework but just occasionally I "get" it. :)

Reading?

I read the wonderful Eva Ibbotson's Magic Flutes this week.  A perfect fairy tale. Loved it. 5 stars. Ten out of ten. I got to the end and instantly downloaded another for my Kindle (in bed - isn't that fabulous!) and have it waiting as one of those special treat reads, to be saved up for when you need one.

If you haven't read Eva, do try one of her books - Madensky Square, set in Vienna before the first world war, or The Morning Gift just before the second war.

And if you need a free read and haven't yet downloaded WILD JUSTICE, it's still free on Kindle UK (US are really annoying me!) and at Smashwords, Nook, iTunes.

Wild Lady and Wild Fire haven't made it from Smashwords onto other platforms yet, but they are available at Smashwords and Kindle everywhere for $2.99 which is jolly cheap for a 400 page book.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH KINDLE

I have been thinking about publishing my Beaumont Brides trilogy on Kindle ever since I realized it was possible.

The books were published in the UK and had a limited retail presence in the US and Australia.  They were, I think, translated into Russian and one or two other languages, but have been out of print for a fair while.

I did publish them as a free reads serial on The Beaumont Brides blog a couple of years ago.  

Finally, when I finished the first draft of my Italian book, I took the bull by the horns, so to speak, re-edited (I was working off my finished mss rather than what eventually made it to print) and was ready to go.

No.  Not ready to go.  I needed cover art.

Actually, that was the fun bit - finding the artwork.  The best beloved then did his magic adding titles and author name, at which point I hit a brick wall. 

The instructions for uploading the mss to Amazon suggested it was simple but my version looked a mess. 

Enter the lovely Jenni, who did the technical stuff for me and voila - a week later all three books are now available to download via Kindle (or your PC if you don't have an eReader).

When I have recovered from the trauma, I will attack the other eBook platforms.  Meanwhile, if you like to try before you buy, the first chapters of all three books are available here

Last week we all got very excited about BAGS. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to offer an opinion, share a story. As to which bag I finally decided on, well, my favourite was the small feathery one, but I think the swirly one goes best with Josie's hair and personality. And since she'll be carrying it at the pre-wedding dinner where she'll need to have her emergency kit to hand, she'll need a little extra room, too.

The books I don't have a single spare copy of are an early trilogy, The Beaumont Brides -- Wild Justice, Wild Lady and Wild Fire.

These were pub'd in the late 90s by Robinson Publishing and are 100,000 word novels about three sisters; a revenge story, a bodyguard story and a Cinderella story.

They've been out of print for a long time and although I plan to tidy them up and publish them as Kindle editions on Amazon, I've decided that in the meantime, fans should be able to read them. So from this week, you'll find them serialized -- a chapter a week -- at a special blog -- The Beaumont Brides. It's there just for you, so when you have a moment help yourself.

MORE BAG NEWS!

I've finally put together my first Clippy Book Bag.

In case you haven't encountered this phenomenon, these bags (in all shapes and sizes) were invented by the lovely Calypso.

Each contains pockets into which you can slip your favourite photographs or any items which define you. On this side I've used aircraft boarding passes, a promo postcard for the Japanese Manga version of The Sheikh's Guarded Heart. There are daffodils and a dragon (for Wales), a postcard I bought in the National Portrait Gallery of T E Lawrence, the little icon that represents my upcoming book, Christmas Angel for the Billionaire, and a birthday card the dh sent me. Oh, and the little gardening bits and pieces that came with a Clippy kit!




On this side, I've put my hero, with one of the grand-dogs. There's a picture of my son's book (Unauthorised Access, out next month), both the grand-cats (Nigel is the ginger guy, Bernard is the black and white chap). There's me as the "stepping queen", one of my pocket calendars (I've got a supply to give away in another pocket!) and the centre pocket represents my trip to RWA New York a few years back. Two silver Rita pins and the covers of the books short-listed that year, with my RWA Conference pin and a Big Apple.



I've also got a big shopping bag with 24 pockets and that's my next project.

I went swimming first thing this morning in Nadira Creek. At dawn the sea is milky and calm and the sun turns the rocks and mist rose pink. It is so beautiful here, so peaceful. And at night the stars are just as Zahir said they would be. Like diamonds…




Er, I think we'll leave Diana reaching for the stars and get on with today's news.

Actually that's a good thing Diana is on another planet because I wanted to tell you about the Finance Director at my daughter’s company. At some unbelievably early age he drew up a Life Plan. It included being married by the age of 21, having his children young and oh, yes, be a Finance Director by the age of 35. And he's there. (I'm wondering what he plans to do the next thirty-five years -- just for investment purposes you understand!)

Anyway, I hope my daughter is taking notes because if we're going to achieve our goals we all need a Life Plan.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, we're at Day Twelve and behind the door today is HER WISH-LIST BRIDEGROOM, in which Juliet Howard, right on the point of achieving her major goal in her own life plan, bang on target, gets tripped up by a meretricious man. (Lying, cheating you name it...) She had every right to be angry, but let's face it, tossing a tray full of champagne over the boss is never going to be a good idea.

Back at square one she’s confronted with her original Life Plan. The one she wrote when she was a teenager. There were the simple things – you have to give yourself plenty of short term stuff to be ticked off and give you the feeling that you’re getting somewhere. There was the achievable. University. A first class degree. The directorship that was within an inch of her grasp. And then there were the goals that were, honestly, just reaching for the stars. Gregor McLeod, the hero of the school yard, had once been at the top of that list. Until he left school, disappeared…

I am Zahir al Khalid and Liz has asked me to reassure you that Diana is safe. She is! I swear it!

Look, I know what you're all thinking. That I'm some kind of unresconstructed nineteenth century throwback who's kidnapped Diana and carried her off and installed her as part of my hareem.

Oh, please. That word. Peel your eyebrows off the ceiling...


I'd stay and give you a language lesson, but I don't have time. I'm in London to launch my new airline. Diana and I... Well, I have to go home and choose a suitable bride. As for Diana, she's made it clear that she has her own life. Which is good. I'm happy for her. Really... And she'll be home as soon as all the fuss has died down. On my honour.

Since she's busy Liz has also asked me to draw the winner of the Day Eight question. The answer was The Temp & the Tycoon -- it's right there on the sidebar of the blog, except apparently the picture has disappeared for some unaccountable reason -- and it was Christy, in Utah, whose name I drew from the hat. Congratulations, Christy. Liz will post the book first thing on Monday morning.

WILD JUSTICE, Liz tells me was the first book of three longer books about the Beaumont sisters. There was supposed to be only one, but her publisher liked Fizz's story so much she asked her to write stories about her sisters, too (WILD LADY and WILD FIRE). This, apparently is Liz's last spare copy of all three volumes and she's offering it to you.

She's asked me to set the question and so I'll ask you this. Liz tells me that she has written two previous novels with a sheikh as the hero. I would like you to tell me what they are called.
