London Olympics...

I loved the opening ceremony which was all about us as a nation, and not thousands of children doing physical jerks. Haven't managed to get to anything, but have sat enraptured as brilliant people gave it their all.

My daughter, her husband and littlest had an absolutely wonderful time in the pool this week (only five rows back!). Veda Mae gave them celebrity status - everyone wanted to talk. She behaved like a perfect lady, entranced by the reflections of the water and sent to sleep by the noise (she wakes up when it's quiet!)

Hi Liz:

At 112 degrees here in Tulsa for the last three days, I’d like to jump into that pool!

BTW: Did the BBC give two hours of prime time to Mrs. Romney’s horse? I think only the British understand that horse stuff. : )

I watch Phelps take his final gold last night - the only evening I've sat and watched Olympics non-stop, apart from the opening ceremony, Vince. What is it with swimmers? I remember Mark Spitz taking 6 gold and he didn't make the table of the big winners.

Completely shattered after Jess, Greg and Mo took gold. And I was just watching. :)

Mrs Romney's horse? :)

Hasn't it been great for team GB? I was pinned to me armchair last night and went to bed feeling good about everything!!

Hi Liz:

Mrs. Romney’s horse is called Rafalca and she is in the Dressage competition – which Great Britain is expected to win. If you don’t know about it, that’s wonderful. Our press wants to show Mrs. Romney as some kind of aristocratic royalty with no interest in commoners. The Democrats love that horse.

BTW: Just to show how provincial we can been in the colonies, while my wife and I have not been watching the Olympics, we did manage to watch one race on tv the other night. In this race a young woman, with a very attractive smile, named Jessica Ennis, won the race and fell on the track exhausted. The whole stadium was cheering like crazy.

We were cheering, too. We thought she had to be American (or why would they be showing this particular event on tape delayed prime time tv?). We were totally shocked when Jess draped the Union Jack over her shoulders! We both said “WHAT?” at the same time!

I told my wife: “I know quite a few romance writers who are going to be very happy about this win!"

I shall look out for Rafalca. Sorry, Vince, thought that was a political insider joke - her husband has not covered himself in glory during his visit. Obviously it was, but of a horse of a v. different colour.

Jess won the Heptathlon and was our poster girl for the Olympics. She'd already competed in 400m hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, 200m (she's Olympic standard in that event) and javeline. And she's not only pretty, but lovely with it. And so tiny!

She could have sat back and taken third in the 800m and still won gold, but she said she wanted to give something to everyone who supported her and put in a last burst to win that last race (which all the heptathletes hate since it's a killer at the end of two days of punishing events.)

The whole country went wild!
