Spring into Writing with the 3 Big Cs

Spring is the time of year when the sap rises, the birds and bees get busy and maybe, just maybe, with the lengthening days, that neglected New Year resolution about writing a book — starting is just so hard — could be shaken out and given an airing.

So where do you begin a story? With the three big Cs.

You have an idea, but an idea isn’t a plot. A plot requires conflict, a conflict big enough to carry a book anywhere between 50,000 and 100,000 words. That’s not going to be something that could be cleared up if the two people involved sat down and actually talked things through. (Obviously, you can never let them have that conversation, but even so…) Imagine your heroine has a life or death goal and the hero is an immovable object blocking the way.

Which segues very neatly to the next big C - character. To have any kind of conflict you need protagonist and an antagonist. A heroine and a hero if you’re writing a traditional romance. Two people with opposing goals. (Or maybe, as in Ally Blake’s brilliant The Secret Wedding Dress, two people with exactly the same goal – except that, as their relationship grows, the goal posts shift).

Finally, once you have a conflict and the characters to battle it out, you need a crucible – a container that can withstand temperatures high enough to melt or otherwise alter its contents. A device, such as a journey, or house, or a problem they are both involved with, which will hold your characters together and change them forever.

Any Excuse for a Kitten Pic...

I'm writing the third in my "ice cream" trilogy at the moment.

This is Geli's story - she's the one who looks like a skinny vampire and collects stray animals.

Well, the vampire has grown up and she's no skinny any more, although she's still addicted to wearing black. And she hasn't been in Italy for more than an hour before she finds a stray kitten. That's gattino in Italian. Or rattino, as the hero insists on calling it.

One of the best bits of writing is research - especially when it's someone glamorous like Milan.  And hero is Dante Vettori. It's all fashion, art, style and although I can't actually get away to the city for a long weekend of walking the ground at the moment, I am having the best fun watching stuff on

Anything But Vanilla - the third kiss...

Anything But Vanilla was launched in retail two weeks ago. I'm not sure how many will be left on the shelves in your local Walmart, or in Barnes & Noble - they will have a new set of books to fill the slots by now so you have to be quick.

Thank goodness for the internet, where they'll be available until stocks run out and to download to eReaders while there's a demand.

So much has changed in our book buying habits since I started writing. It used to be the dash to W H Smith (in the UK) to buy the new Mills and Boons on the first Friday in the month when the new titles hit the shelves so that you could be sure to get your favourite authors. Then the numbers of books and series published increased to the point where they split them up and released new books in two batches. I'm not sure if that was more excitement, or just confusion.

The supermarkets got in on the act,  giving women the opportunity to add the treat of a romance to the weekly shop, and taking the place of the corner shops and newsagents that had once stocked the books - although since it was only the bigger branches it meant that some people were no longer able to pick them up since that usually involved a car journey. Always winners and losers - it's been a bumpy ride.

Amazon appeared in our lives and those of us with access to the internet no longer had to hunt the shelves of charity shops to find old backlist books by favourite authors - they could be delivered to the door. It made used books big business - good for readers but hard for publishers, authors and booksellers (who, unlike the big charity bookshops that were opening, actually have to pay rent and staff) and who need readers to buy new books to stay in business. If they aren't making a living there are no new books.

And then the eReaders gave "one-click" a whole new meaning with instant gratification, no waiting joy when a favourite author released a new book. Plus the "try before you buy" first chapter downloads for authors you didn't know, but whose book blurbs intrigued. And adustable print size for those of us whose eyesight has never been great and are deteriorating with age.

Now you can not just read anywhere - on your phone, your tablet - you can buy a book wherever you are and here to tempt you to download that first chapter is another moment from Anything But Vanilla - another #KISSkiss.

Diabetes...

It's May, the month when the romance community and many fabulously generous companies come together to support the Brenda Novak Online Auction for Diabetes Research.

Everyone knows someone who suffers from diabetes. Maybe not the desperate Type 1 which, since last year's auction, has hit the  daughter of an acquaintance. She's six years old and each day she has to inject herself with insulin. Think about that when you check out the absolutely amazing items on offer in this year's auction.

Brenda - whose son has the disease  -  has so far raised a total of $1.6 million through the power of love. This year she's hoping to surpass the $2 million mark.

It doesn't have to cost each of us very much. There are signed books by favourite authors as well as the high cost items.

This year I've donated a Kindle Paperwhite loaded with some of my eBooks - you can bid HERE

And a group of KISS authors have put together a bundle of signed books which you can bid for

First Page Friday - Joss Wood's Top Pick "KISS"

My First Page Friday guest this week is fellow KISS author, Joss Wood, who is giving us a taste of her 4.5 star TOP PICK debut book IT WAS ONLY A KISS.

Here’s the blurb!

Luke Savage never failed! Ok there was the marriage thing, he’d dropped the ball on that one, but in his defence he’d been duped from the beginning. Now he was divorcing Satan’s sister, so everything was back on track. That was until a beautiful, cocky twenty-something interning in his marketing department waltzed into his office and announced his marketing plan, for his recently inherited family vineyard, sucked!

Jess Sherwood was bright, ambitious and a know-it-all. She was also gorgeous as sin and made Luke feel things he shouldn’t. But that didn’t excuse her intrusion into his office and her blatant disregard for his authority in his own company. So after kissing her senseless, Luke fires Jess and kicks her out of his office. No way was an arrogant little madam with all of five minutes experience going to tell him his business would fail!

Eight years later, Luke’s family vineyard is failing. With the insurmountable debts he’s inherited from his father to pay off, Luke is struggling to keep St Sylve Vineyards afloat. A successful businessman in his own right, it would be so easy to sell up and return to his own thriving company. But how can he sell off the work of his many fore-fathers and generations his family’s history? Luke has never failed in business before and he isn’t about to start now. What he needs is a hip new marketing strategy… and he knows just the woman for the job! Their only problem is how to keep their minds on work and off that kiss!

And here’s the first page…

Eight years ago…

‘So, in conclusion I think the marketing strategy your people presented to you is hackneyed, stupid and asinine and plays absolutely no attention to your demographics, to the market research and to where your competitors are placing themselves. It’s under researched and knocked together and if you follow it I guarantee that you will lose most of your market share in five years time, if not your business.’

Luke Savage looked across his messy desk at the earnest young woman perched on the edge of her chair, her face animated with youthful zeal and healthy dose of arrogance. What was her name again? He glanced down at her file in front of him─ Jess Sherwood. She was twenty-two, he read and was currently doing her MBA in marketing. The file did state that she was over blessed with brains, her school and university achievements were─ to put it mildly─ impressive but it failed to mention that she was solidly gorgeous as well.

A true brown eyed blonde.

She was quite a parcel and boy, did she know it…

Luke kept his face impassive as she draped one long, slim leg over the other and lightly linked her hands around a bare knee, an index finger tapping away. She wore a short, flouncy dress falling off one shoulder and showing a thin purple bra strap; belted at slim hips by a broad leather belt. Falling to mid-thigh, it was too short, too casual and too sexy an outfit for work but she wore it with careless confidence.

Luke, who was seldom surprised at much, was taken aback by her self-importance and her balls-to-the-wall chutzpah.

‘Wood’s tortured hero is believable and compelling and the story takes readers on a passionate, emotional rollercoaster ride.’ Sabrina Madan RT Book Reviews Top Pick for May.

Anything But Vanilla goes Sexy in Oz

Anything But Vanilla... by Liz Fielding

Sorrel Amery is determined to make her summer event the talk of the town, and she knows just the way into people's hearts - Champagne sorbet! It's the perfect strategy…until the ice cream parlour's owner runs off, leaving Sorrel's plans melting faster than a sundae in the summer sun.

When the luscious Alexander West arrives to help pick up the pieces, Sorrel's life gets shaken up more than ever before! Especially as this globe-trotting adventurer is determined that nothing in her life should ever be boring old vanilla again…

It Was Only A Kiss by Joss Wood

For driven businessman Luke Savage success is the only option. So when gorgeous marketing intern Jess Sherwood waltzes into his office and casually informs him that his newly inherited vineyard has an image problem, he's outraged! She's naïve and overly ambitious, all Luke can do to stop her talking...is to kiss her.

Eight years later the vineyard needs a boost - and Luke needs a hip new marketing strategy to save it. Jess may drive him crazy but she's the right woman for the job. Their only problem is how to keep their minds on work and off that kiss!

It all started with a Kiss

Have you see the new Kiss titles that were launched in February and have been hitting the top sales spot at Harlequin regularly ever since?

This is a new, fun, flirty, sensual and sexy series launched in the US.

What Publishers Weekly said about Kelly Hunter's launch title, The One That Got Away...

"Hunter launches Harlequin's Kiss contemporary romance imprint with an emotionally powerful and beautifully rendered love story... Readers who thrive on empowered woman and dangerous men will relish this carfefully craft, intense romance with a modern, relevant voice, which sets a very high bar for the Kiss line."

And readers agree...

"It has been twenty years since I read a Harlequin romance. But something about the cover, the description and the fact that Mira Lyn Kelly is a USA TODAY bestselling author intrigued me. And I am so glad it did. My reintroduction to Harlequin could not have been better. I read all 224 pages in oen day and am happily looking forward to reading mynext KISS collection book.!

"Waksing Up Married isthe perfect combination of new romance, angst, flirtiness and sex (not so much it makes me blush but not so little it left me wondering.)"

"If you love romance with just a little bit of sex and love and ... then, this is for you."

"I really like this book. The characters were likeable with a great sense of humor. I was definitely drawn in from the first page. It was a refreshing, light read. My only regret is that it ended so soon and I would have liked more."
